At Dirty Clean Food we care about the environment and we’re passionate about reducing our carbon footprint throughout the food journey. 

Food Packaging

We try to keep packaging to a minimum but need to strike a balance between protecting the quality and food safety of produce against our goal to minimise our impact on the environment. Packaging plays a critical role in protecting our food throughout its journey. We are aiming to minimise our packaging and use either recycled/recyclable or compostable materials. We strongly encourage you to leave out your packaging for our delivery drivers to collect when dropping off your next order. This helps to reduce waste and lengthen the product's life. We can accept your Dirty Clean Food cardboard boxes, thermal liners, bubble wrap, egg cartons and ice packs. 

Please place your Fruit and Veggie cardboard boxes in your council bin for recycling.

Cardboard Cartons are made from a high percentage of recycled paper cardboard, you can reuse them, return them to us with your next order or they ‘re 100% recyclable through your council bins. 

Bubblewrap and Thermal Carton Liners can be returned to us for reusing and recycling. You can also recycle these at RedCycle bins. We reuse all viable packaging that is returned to us!

Ice packs can be reused, returned or the non-toxic filling can be sprinkled over your garden beds to help the soil retain water.

Vacuum bags- we use recyclable vacuum sealed bags or where possible, home compostable vacuum seal bags, made from cassava root and corn derivatives blended with a copolymer. These will fully break down when disposed of in a composting environment containing heat, water, oxygen, soil and microorganisms. Sadly, compostable bags are not yet suitable for meat cuts containing bones - but we’re working on alternatives.

What Does Home Compostable Mean?

It means you can dispose of our packaging in your compost heap and let the worms and environment do the work to break it down. 

• It is made from plants - far more renewable than recyclable and non-recyclable plastics made from fossil fuels
• Turns back into soil quickly to help more plants grow
• Even if it goes into landfill, it very quickly turns into soil which is far better than both recyclable and non-recyclable plastics which break down into micro-plastics

Tips and Trips to Becoming a Home Compost Aficionado

Check the vacuum bag has 'place in compost' stamped on the side before placing in the compost. Remove any stickers. If you are composting in your green bin or your compost pile, a balance of soil, temperature, moisture, oxygen and micro-organisms are needed for the packaging to break down. Always use plenty of soil especially if more compostable packaging is added to the mix. We don’t want your compost to stop working because the ratio is wrong.

Dirty Clean Food’s Oat Milk is the world’s first regeneratively grown, certified carbon neutral oat milk. The oats have fewer inputs, require less water and produce lower greenhouse gas emissions than other plant-based alternatives, ensuring our milk is gentle on mother earth. Our oat milk is certified carbon neutral by Climate Active through growing, harvesting, transporting and manufacturing from the farm gate to our Perth based warehouse. As a business, we have also committed to become carbon neutral operationally by 2023.
